Abstract With the accelerating pace of technological developments, translation applications have emerged as the latest trend of machine translation to serve users’ needs for various purposes such as study, work, travel, and entertainment. While the goal of every service, including translation, is to attain user satisfaction, a greater understanding of users’ expectations is essential to improve translation applications and enhance the user experience. This study aims at exploring the users’ quality expectations of translation applications and the realistic features of the applications. A qualitative research design was used to analyze 240 user expectations selected purposefully from 12 popular translation applications. The descriptions given by the developers of the 12 applications were evaluated using Ryan’s ( 1993) model to explore the correspondence between users’ expectations and realistic features of translation applications. The findings revealed a detailed list of quality service criteria and translation quality criteria as well as suggestions to improve both types of criteria. The study may have empirical and theoretical implications for translation researchers and translation application developers in the attempt to compile a comprehensive and realistic profile of translation application features and quality. The application users and human translators can also benefit from the findings.

Resumo Com o ritmo acelerado dos desenvolvimentos tecnológicos, os aplicativos de tradução surgiram como a última tendência da tradução automática para atender às necessidades dos usuários para diversos fins, como estudo, trabalho, viagens e entretenimento. Embora o objetivo de todos os serviços, incluindo a tradução, seja alcançar a satisfação do utilizador, uma maior compreensão das expectativas dos utilizadores é essencial para melhorar as aplicações de tradução e melhorar a experiência do utilizador. Este estudo visa explorar as expectativas de qualidade dos usuários em relação aos aplicativos de tradução e os recursos realistas dos aplicativos. Um projeto de pesquisa qualitativa foi utilizado para analisar 240 expectativas de usuários selecionadas propositalmente em 12 aplicativos de tradução populares. As descrições fornecidas pelos desenvolvedores dos 12 aplicativos foram avaliadas usando o modelo de Ryan ( 1993) para explorar a correspondência entre as expectativas dos usuários e as características realistas dos aplicativos de tradução. As conclusões revelaram uma lista detalhada de critérios de qualidade de serviço e critérios de qualidade de tradução, bem como sugestões para melhorar ambos os tipos de critérios. O estudo pode ter implicações empíricas e teóricas para pesquisadores de tradução e desenvolvedores de aplicativos de tradução na tentativa de compilar um perfil abrangente e realista dos recursos e da qualidade dos aplicativos de tradução. Os usuários do aplicativo e os tradutores humanos também podem se beneficiar das descobertas.

Abstract Audiovisual translation of humor has long been a challenge faced by translators. It is inevitable for translators to remove or reduce some of the humorous effect in the target language despite their endeavor to preserve the humor elements. This qualitative study aimed to investigate the reasons behind the loss of humor in translation of the humorous scenes from an American comedy cartoon, SpongeBob SquarePants. Sperber and Wilson (1986)’s Relevance theory and Chaume (2004)’s Constraints of Dubbing framework were adopted in this study. The analysis was carried out by comparing the Zabalbeascoa (1993; 1996)’s humorous loads in each identified scenes in English and the Chinese dubbed version. The findings indicated that community and institution, community sense of humor and linguistic elements are prone to be lost in this type of translation not merely due to the linguistic and cultural asymmetry but also because of the synchronization constraints of dubbing. It was found that the substitution strategy which preserved the humor effect became ineffective because the new humorous elements recreated by the translator may not be synchronized with the actor’s lip movements, actions and length of utterance displayed on screen. Despite the unavoidable loss of the untranslatable elements, the maximum preservation of visual and non-marked elements which can be deciphered by the target audience without making unnecessary efforts compensates for the loss, contributing to the popularity and success of this comedy product in the target language and culture.

Resumo O humor é limitado pela cultura ou linguagem, e envolve conhecimento e história compartilhados entre o emissor e o receptor, o que poderia tornar a legendagem de humor ainda mais complicada. Este estudo teve como objetivo explorar as estratégias de legendagem utilizadas no fansub da série televisiva The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, bem como os elementos humorísticos do texto fonte e alvo em cada humor, e os erros de tradução cometidos do inglês para o fansub chinês. Foram identificadas e analisadas instâncias de humor e explicadas as estratégias de legendagem utilizadas pelos fãs. Os resultados mostraram que a qualidade inconsistente do fansub pode ser devido a restrições linguísticas e técnicas, conhecimento cultural insuficiente das culturas de origem e destino e desvios das normas de tradução, resultando em erros de tradução linguísticos, pragmáticos, culturais e específicos do texto. O estudo pode ter algumas implicações teóricas e práticas para tradutores, legendadores e treinadores.

Abstract Humour is bounded by culture or language, and it involves shared knowledge and history between the sender and the receiver, which could make humour subtitling even more complicated. This study aimed at exploring the subtitling strategies used in fansub in the television series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as well as the humour elements of source and target text in each humour, and the translation errors made in English to Chinese fansub. Humour instances were identified and analysed, and the subtitling strategies used by fans were explained. The findings showed the inconsistent quality of fansub could be due to linguistic and technical constraints, insufficient cultural knowledge of the source and target cultures, and deviations from translation norms, resulting in linguistic, pragmatic, cultural and text-specific translation errors. The study could have some theoretical and practical implications for translators, subtitlers, and trainers.
